3 key efforts advance: Recovery, housing, open space

Town planning hopes that a week of community forums jump-starts conversations around economic development, housing, open space and recreation. If you missed a forum, see the videos, presentations and opportunities to engage that are available online.

Three town initiatives receivedvirtual community forums June 8, 9 and 10 -- the Massachusetts Local Rapid Recovery Plan for Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford; the housing plan; and the open space and recreation plan update. If you were unable to participate, recordings of each meeting, meeting materials and opportunities to share feedback are available on the town’s website. 

  • Local Rapid Recovery Plan Tri-Community Forum: June 8

The towns of Bedford, Lexington and Arlington are participating in the local rapid-recovery plan, aimed at helping communities develop actionable plans to aid commercial areas recover from Covid-19. Nearly 100 members from the three communities attended June 8 to hear findings, assessment and research from consultant, Finepoint Associates. Participants shared their ideas for supporting economic recovery; for Arlington’s participants, the focus was on how best to support Arlington Heights businesses along the Minuteman Bikeway.

Information and ideas gathered at the forum will inform project recommendations. The final action-oriented plan will help the three towns develop immediate strategies for short-term recovery and outline a set of projects and strategies necessary to address Covid-19 recovery needs.

  • Housing Plan Virtual Community Forum: June 9

On Wednesday, June 9, the Housing Plan Implementation Committee, with planning, hosted the first of several community forums to develop an update to the 2016 housing production plan. Approximately 50 community members participated in the forum, where they heard a summary of what consultants from Barrett Planning Group and Horsley Witten have heard through recent stakeholder interviews and a community questionnaire. Forum attendees also learned about the overall planning process for the housing plan and participated in breakout discussions focused on Arlington’s housing needs, challenges and opportunities.

Community members who were unable to join the forum on the 9th are invited to share their feedback using an online form, and through additional engagement opportunities to be announced this summer.

  • Open Space and Recreation Plan Update Virtual Community Workshop: June 10

Arlington's Open Space Committee and planning are updating the 2015-2022 Open Space and Recreation Plan with the help of technical consultant Horsley Witten. One June 10, Open Space Committee hosted the first plan update workshop, attended by 47 community members. The workshop provided an overview of the update process and the state requirements for such plans.

The Open Space Committee and Parks & Recreation Commission provided an update about the accomplishments of the current plan, after which participants joined breakout groups to discuss ways the town is addressing open space and recreation needs, where the town can improv and missed opportunities.

The workshop presentation is available on the committee website, along with additional information on the planning timeline and upcoming opportunities to engage in the project.
