At 17, this site looks ahead with hope

YourArlington turned 17 years old on Sunday, Dec. 10. Time for us to think about "applying to college." Do we shoot for an Ivy, or for a more affordable alternative?

In effect, the site devoted to Arlington news and opinion is considering a parallel transition.

Following the award of a $20,000 grant from a national organization that supports local news and a successful gala in November -- we raised more than $26,000 -- YourArlington is looking to the future. Its nonprofit board is considering proposals from consultants who will help shape what the site aims to be, in 2024 and beyond.

Plans for these funds include making the site a sustainable nonprofit by increasing donations and financial support from town businesses. That money will help us boost pay for our hardworking editors, Judith Pfeffer and Brynn O'Connor, as well as for our freelance writers. Further, such funds -- which are tax-deductible -- will let us consider expanding.

Who knows? Perhaps someday YourArlington will have brick-and-mortar location in the Center, as The Advocate once did. (The weekly newspaper left town in 1997.)

More immediately, beyond these business ambitions, the consulting road ahead includes consideration of revamping the site's appearance, what it reports about. and how its news and views are presented.

As we move forward in the process, I will be seeking your advice: You, our grassroots consultants.

Plans are taking shape. A new year awaits.
