selectboard 052019

UPDATED April 29: The Arlington Select Board met Wednesday, April 24, in hybrid session: in person at the Select Board chambers, second floor, Town Hall, 730 Mass. Ave., and also via Zoom. The meeting lasted a bit more than an hour.

Board members deliberated on Special Town Meeting Article 5 -- a resolution calling for a ceasefire and other measures in relation to the situation in Gaza -- and several town residents spoke during public comment. But ultimately the vote by the board was to table the discussion, with review currently set for Wednesday, May 1, and any possible vote May 6

Board members said they did this because they had had only about 30 minutes to discuss it tonight and also because it is a Jewish holiday [the third night of the eight-night observance of Passover], so the thought was that many people who might otherwise have wished to be there possibly could not attend.

Article 5 asks Town Meeting members to consider whether to adopt a resolution seeking, among other measures, an immediate, permanent ceasefire in the six-month-long Israel-Hamas war. Earlier in the day, late Wednesday afternoon, the town's Human Rights Commission voted 8-1 to endorse Article 5. Any votes by the commission and the board are advisory in nature only; any decision would be made next month by Town Meeting Members.

The text of the article is as follows: "To see if the Town will vote to adopt a proclamation in favor of an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Palestine and Israel, the release of all hostages, the immediate provision of lifesaving aid, and a diplomatic resolution for Palestinians and Israelis based upon values of dignity, equity, and justice; or take any action related there."
