The Arlington Police Department reported that it had arrested Jimmy L. Kerlin, of Park Avenue in Arlington, shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of driving while under the influence, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and following too closely.
This followed a collision on Appleton Street near Harvard and Daniels streets with a vehicle driven by another party, who was not named.
In a heavily redacted arrest report, one investigating officer was quoted as having "smelled an odor of alcoholic beverage" on Kerlin's breath and "informed him that I would be running him through a series of field sobriety tests."
The report states that based on Kerlin having failed all three tests, observations by three officers of him being unsteady on his feet and having difficulty understanding basic verbal commands, allegedly having rear-ended another driver and then having allegedly begun driving off in the opposite direction, the arrest was made on the three above-stated charges. The report noted that this was the first time that Kerlin had been arrested on suspicion of OUI.
