Marilyn E. FlahertyFlaherty

Marilyn E. Flaherty, a well-known Arlington educator for a half century who had been principal of the Peirce School for 24 years, died Monday, Feb. 29. She was 83.

She taught third grade for 10 years, served as a reading consultant to a dozen schools for another decade, spent three years as director of reading, another three years as the principal of the Locke School and finished her career at Peirce.

She held many positions and leadership roles.

Ms. Marilyn was past president and member of Board of of Directors of the Salem State University Alumni Association. She was past president of the Boston University School of Education Alumni Association. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Salem State University Friends of the School of Education. She was also a founder and past president of the Directors of Reading Association.

She graduated from Salem State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a reading specialist certificate and an master's in education at Boston College as well as a doctorate in education from Boston University.

She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Zonta International, Phi Delta Kappa, Pi Lambda Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, American Association of University Women and Catholic Women’s Club. She held many leadership roles and was the recipient of numerous awards. She was an avid volunteer for many organizations and nonprofit organizations.

Born in Somerville on Aug. 24, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Dacey) Flaherty; sister of Patricia Moore and husband Thomas and James Flaherty and wife Gracemarie; aunt to six nephews, two nieces and grandaunt of 22 nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are Friday, March 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St. (Rt. 60, near St. Agnes Church). The funeral is from Keefe on Saturday, March 5, at 9 a.m.

Following is a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Agnes Church, 30 Medford St., at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.

Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, 175 Broadway, Malden.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ms. Flaherty's name may be made to the Mary, Marilyn, James Flaherty Scholarship Fund Salem State University c/o Foundation Board or the Marilyn Flaherty Scholarship Fund c/o Arlington High School.
