Mark Harvey of Arlington, at left in 2013, long a powerful force in local jazz, received the Boston Jazz Hero Award on Sunday, May 3, at Wally's Café, 427 Mass. Ave., Boston.

There was light refreshments and music by the John Funkhouser Trio.

JazzBoston co-hosted a party with Wally’s Café to honor Harvey, the recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s (JJA) 2015 Boston Jazz Hero award.  Dr. Harvey is a minister, musician, educator and community builder.

His Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (42nd season) is one of the longest-running large jazz ensembles in the world.

Music writer and former jazz radio host Steve Elman will present the award.
